New Orleans Rugby defeats Nashville
New Orleans RFC opened its fall season with a 53-0 result over visiting Nashville this past Saturday. Conditions were generally hot and muggy, and took an obvious toll on the preseason fitness of both sides.
“The match was pretty sloppy all the way around,” NORFC Head Coach Jerry Malina observed. “The big plus for us is that we had an opportunity to get about 30 of our guys on the field at some point today.” New Orleans hosted Tulane University in a 2nd side match following Nashville, and rolling subs were allowed in both contests.
The scoreline belies the fact that the short-handed Nashville featured a bruising tighthead prop who operated as well in the open field as in tight, a highly skilled 8-man, and a shifty flyhalf who looked dangerous all day but just wasn’t provided the right runner in the right gap to break the New Orleans line.
For New Orleans, flyhalf Ricky DeCastro, center Jeff Reuther, and fullback David Buckingham, back after a yearlong ACL rehab, scored multiple tries each. Flankers Kevin Kern and rookie LSU product Jimmy Rehkopf put in a solid day keeping Nashville’s crafty number 8 in check, and hooker Tony Breaux found work all over the pitch, cleaning up loose balls, filling gaps on defense and making himself a pest in general at Nashville’s breakdown.
This coming weekend New Orleans hosts the Inaugural French Revolution Midnight 10s tournament, followed on Oct. 3 by a meeting in Panama City with Tampa Bay Krewe, who ushered New Orleans out of the South playoffs last spring.

Summer 7s Rugby for area youth
Last night, Wed. June 17th, several members of the NORFC community met with Nancy Arceneaux from the Jefferson Parish Department of Juvenile Services. Nancy gave the five soon to be coaches of the new league an introduction to mentoring. Both Nancy and the coaches learned a lot from each other. Nancy came into the evening without much knowledge of rugby. However, she left excited about rugby's potential to teach area youth good values and life lessons. The coaches of the new league are determined to teach rugby the right way so that what the young adults learn on the field can help them in their everyday lives.
The league is still looking for additional sponsorship. Each donor will sponsor a specific team and provide for the necessary uniforms and limited equipment needed. For more information on sponsorships or any other aspect of the league contact one of the league supervisors, David Buckingham: David@TheRugbyPub.com.
